The AYF began the Armenia Internship Program in 1991. The goal of the program was to encourage Armenians in the Diaspora to visit and volunteer in Armenia to not only assist local businesses, agencies, and organizations, but to also provide an enriching experience for the people who volunteer. Prior to 1991, the idea of an independent state for the people of Armenia was inconceivable. Armenians today are fortunate to have a homeland; however, until an Armenian sets foot in Armenia, Armenia will remain an idea. An internship in Armenia makes the homeland a reality through experiencing first-hand the people and culture of present day Armenia.
The AYF Interns at a school in Shoushi
Armenia has undergone tremendous change since 1991. The fall of the Soviet Union, transition to a market economy, and the cease-fire in Nagorno Karabagh will hopefully allow the state and people of Armenia to prosper. The Diaspora will serve as a valuable resource in the growth and stability of Armenia, and as a summer intern you can contribute to Armenia’s progress. For two months each summer, students are placed in government agencies, private companies, or other organizations. Internships are available in almost every field. Membership in the AYF is not necessary for eligibility.

AYF Interns visiting Dzidzernagapert
The program seeks motivated people who are willing to devote their summer, from mid-June to mid-August, and volunteer in Armenia. The experience has been described by interns as both challenging and enriching. During the week, interns volunteer at their assigned internship. On the weekends, organized trips will take the group throughout the country and Nagorno Karabagh. The internship directors will also provide opportunities for you to take Armenian language lessons, attend weekly lecture series, cultural events, and any other activities in which the group may show interest.

AYF Interns in Republic Square
For the first time, the AYF Internship will be housed in homestays which promises to enrich the experience by living with a local family in Yervan. The homestay will have all of the necessities, hot water and a personal room. During the week and on weekends, the interns are encouraged to explore the city independently. Yerevan is a vibrant city with much to offer. In addition to having an incredible view of Mount Ararat, Yerevan has numerous museums, theaters and concert halls, such as the Matenadaran - the Institute of Ancient Manuscripts, the National Art Gallery, and Aram Khachaturian Concert Hall. The city also offers several cafes, restaurants, and clubs for the interns to socialize and relax. It is truly up to the intern to gain the fullest experience possible from this internship. The directors will do all they can to provide the resources for you to take advantage of this opportunity.
